A compulsive shopper may also enter a return cycle, in which shame develops around a purchase and the purchase is returned, but the shopper buys more items at the store. Compulsive shoppers also tend to purchase a wide range of items, some of which don't fit or seem extremely impractical.

Compulsive shopping typically occurs in cycles. Depression, boredom or emotional distress such as a bereavement or breakup of a relationship may set off an impulse to shop. Shopping gives shopaholics a sort of euphoria, excitement and "high".

Compulsive shopper shops constantly to feel better, and as a pick me up, becoming addicted to the process of shopping and spending money. Others may become compulsive in response to holiday stress, failing relationships, or problems at work.

Compulsive shopping focuses on identifying the root causes of the problem, and trying to break the habit. People who predisposed to compulsive shopping are often encouraged to avoid owning credit cards, to set very specific budgets and shopping expectations, and to be very careful about casual shopping.

In the addiction/recovery field, it has long been noted that many addicts seem to have money manageability issues. Many relapses also occur when money stresses pile up. Yet, we have been slow to assess and treat shopping and spending behaviors as part of good overall recovery foundation.

Our society largely deals with materialistic things and attaches a lot of sentiment to it. Hence shopping for gifts for friends, family, children, etc is done with a lot of care and thought. Buying things for the house is an experience as rich and rewarding as the item itself. Thus shopping is an emotional task and one cannot have enough of it. This is the main reason that compulsive shopping is not taken as a serious disorder. But the truth is that people who suffer from oniomania face financial, emotional and mental devastation.

Buying is something that people associate with normal behavior. So, compulsive buying is not really considered to be a disorder. People may not like it and may suffer losses due to it, but it still takes some talking to make them understand that this is a disorder. All the cases we have seen so far at this center were brought in for some other disorder. It was only in the course of treatment that compulsive buying was discovered.

What makes assessment, treatment and recovery more challenging for most compulsive spenders are several factors: one, the behavior is legal; two, most if not all people shop/spend; three, it's an activity that's greatly encouraged by advertising and by social culture; it's easily accessible even from home; and stopping shopping and spending (complete abstinence) is unrealistic and not even the primary goal.

Compulsive shopping can be a seasonal balm for the depression, anxiety and loneliness during the December holiday season. It also can occur when a person feels depressed, lonely and angry. Shopping and spending will not assure more love, bolster self-esteem, or heal the hurts, regrets, stress, and the problems of daily living. It generally makes these feelings worse because of the increased financial debt the person has obtained from compulsive shopping.

Compulsive shopping can lead to financial problems, family conflicts, stress, depression, and loss of self-esteem. Previous measures depend in large part on the consequences of shopping, such as financial difficulties and family strain over money matters. But the authors explain that compulsive shoppers with higher incomes may experience fewer financial consequences yet still have compulsive tendencies.

Compulsive shopping include regularly breaking a set budget, shopping to feel better, being unable to set a budget at all, hiding shopping expeditions, and running up extremely high balances on credit cards. A compulsive shopper may also enter a return cycle, in which shame develops around a purchase and the purchase is returned, but the shopper buys more items at the store.

People engage in compulsive buying or spending on occasion, particularly at Christmastime when they get caught up in the excitement or pressure of buying. While most people keep their spending under control, some may develop a more serious problem.

Your efforts to stop compulsive shopping are going to be largely unsuccessful until you make a conscious decision that you do not want to be in this place in your life again. Ever. You must learn to recognize the habits that have lead you to a serious shopping problem and take steps to put an end to these bad habits and poor decisions.
