The call is still direct dialed using dialing codes usually referred to as country codes, along with the local exchange telephone number. More and more companies are using Voice over IP as the means of offering low cost international calling to their customers.

Direct dialing to family, friends and business associates in Pakistan or other places can involve calling a specific access number, local to you, through an intermediary. Once you dial the direct number, it engages an open channel to your destination call. Then you simply dial the country's code and then the destination phone number.
