This jacket is modeled on the achkan or sherwani, which has been a form of native dress in India and Southeast Asia since the 18th century. Nehru popularized the style while in office, frequently being photographed in the design, and it became very popular in India as well as abroad, especially among members of the counterculture movement.

Nehru jacket is characterized by its short collar. It is definitely shorter than Prince Edward’s. At the first, Nehru jacket only has one color option for people who want to wear it; there was only white color available for the jacket in the past. However, nowadays, the jackets have been available for any kind of color as its option.
