A pastry bag is a fantastic thing to have in the kitchen, particularly if you like piping icing onto cakes or attempting more complicated cake decorations. You can also use a pastry bag to create decorative arrangements of any type of semi-solid food.

A pastry bag is an often cone- or triangular-shaped, hand-held bag made from cloth, paper, or plastic that is used to pipe semi-solid foods by pressing them through a narrow opening at one end, for many purposes including cake decoration. It is filled through a wider opening at the opposite end, rolled or twisted closed, and then squeezed to extrude its contents.

A pastry bag can usually be purchased at a craft store, some grocers, and baking supply stores. Traditionally pastry bags were made from an oiled linen type material but today the home cook can get them in parchment or plastic and polyester. Essentially a pastry bag is a cone shape that is fitted with a tip that allow the user to apply a frosting to cakes, cookies and pastries in a decorative pattern.
